Every Thursday throughout the summer the Shady Grove offers a free concert. Last night it was Jame McMurtry (yes, that is the son of Larry McMurtry author of Lonesome Dove and other books). James is the one on the left in the picture. He seems to only play midnight shows at the Continental Club, which is just a tad too late for the beginning of a show for me. But seeing him play at 7:30 was irresistible so we went. You must have needed to get there at 5 to get a seat because by 6:10 all of the seats were packed and the close in grass area was also full. We found a great place to stand though where security did not constantly ask us to move and we could see the stage. It was a great show.
Afterwards I went to my colleague Richard's 40th birthday party - a surprise party thrown for him by his wife Kristin. She went all out with Whole Foods catering, tables set up in the back yard with white tableclothes, oak trees wrapped in lights, a photobooth & scrapbook table (where you made your own page for Richard's book), a cake that their dog Buzzy pretty much devoured and lots of beverages.
PS - as of yesterday, I think, we have been living in Texas for 15 years!!
